Andre Russell made a stunning return for the West Indies, driving his team to a 1-0 series lead against England in the T20I series.
In an electrifying match in Barbados, Russell shone both with the bat and the ball, guiding the West Indies to chase down England’s target comfortably with 11 balls to spare.
England began their innings on a high note, scoring 77 runs in the powerplay. Phil Salt initiated a rapid start with three fours in the opening over, while Jos Buttler continued the onslaught with boundaries. However, a nightmarish over from Alzarri Joseph resulted in 26 runs for England, causing a setback for the West Indies.
Despite a promising start, England stuttered in the latter half of their innings. Buttler slowed down, and wickets fell at crucial moments, leading to a sudden collapse from 165/5 to 171 all out. Andre Russell’s impactful bowling, along with contributions from Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph, stifled England’s momentum.
The West Indies, in their chase, matched England’s fervor during the powerplay. Brandon King and Kyle Mayers played aggressively, with King’s dismissal checked by a spectacular catch from Ben Duckett. Nonetheless, the hosts managed 59 runs in the first six overs, gaining control of the chase.
However, the momentum shifted as England’s Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed picked up crucial wickets, causing a brief stutter in the West Indies’ chase. Rain interruptions halted play momentarily, but upon resumption, Rehan rattled the West Indies’ middle order with two swift wickets.
Despite the setback, Andre Russell, supported by Rovman Powell, swung the game back in the West Indies’ favor. Russell’s explosive batting, complemented by Powell’s six-hitting spree, sealed the victory for the West Indies with ease. His extraordinary all-round performance marked a triumphant return to the West Indies side after two years, solidifying their lead in the series.
