The most advanced technology in modern football is Video Assistant Referee (VAR). It has become a vital part of football, ensuring greater accuracy in refereeing decisions. The Qatar World Cup witnessed the significant dominance of VAR technology, where it played a crucial role in making precise decisions in several matches.
VAR technology in the Qatar World Cup went through multiple tests and improvements before reaching its current stage. It was first tested in a friendly match between Dutch club PSV Eindhoven and FC Eindhoven in July 2016. Later, in September of the same year, another test was conducted during an international friendly match between Italy and France.
How VAR Works
VAR is not a fully automated system. Instead, it is operated by a team of 13 officials. The system functions with the help of 33 broadcast cameras installed around the football field. The VAR team constantly monitors every aspect of the match and communicates with the on-field referee whenever necessary using technological support.

Decisions VAR Can Make
Goal or No Goal
VAR plays a crucial role in determining whether a player’s shot has crossed the goal line or not. It also checks if the goal was scored by an offside player. Using multiple cameras, VAR provides replays in slow motion, super slow motion, or even ultra-slow motion to help referees make the correct decision.
Penalty Decision or No Penalty
VAR technology helps determine whether a penalty should be awarded or not. If the on-field referee misses an incident that should result in a penalty, VAR will notify them. This includes handballs or fouls inside the penalty box that the referee may have overlooked. Additionally, if a penalty decision is given, the opposing team has the right to challenge the referee’s decision and request a VAR review.
Reviewing Direct Red Card Decisions
If a referee issues a direct red card in response to an incident, the affected team can appeal the decision. In such cases, VAR will analyze the incident carefully and provide the final decision.
When the Referee Misses an Important Incident
If an important moment in a match escapes the referee’s notice, VAR provides the necessary footage and data to assist in making the correct decision.
