Atalanta stopped the Bayer Leverkusen unbeaten winning streak by 3-0 in the final on Wednesday. This is the major European trophy for Gasperini’s side.
Gian Piero Gasperini admitted that winning the Europa League is a ‘Footballing Fairytale’. Atalanta’s Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman scored a Hat-trick to secure their first-ever major European trophy after the Coppa Italia in 1963.
Xabi Alonso’s side was 51 games unbeaten when they faced Italian club Atalanta at Aviva Stadium, Dublin. Atalanta showed excellent domination throughout the match, winning by 3-0.
Atalanta is also the first Italian side to win the European league since it was renamed in 2009, with Parma in 1999 being the last team which won the UEFA Cup.
Gian Piero Gasperini, who is the oldest coach to win the Europa League said of Atalanta’s win over mighty Leverkusen.
“Having won it with Atalanta is perhaps one of those footballing fairy tales that very rarely happens, and it does show there’s still room for meritocracy in football,” Gaseperini said after the match.
“We produced a wonderful performance, and we needed to do that against such a top side Bayer Leverkusen. We scored three splendid goals.”
