The Copa America, after the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship, is another popularities tournament for football fans. Organized by the South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL, the Copa América takes place every three years and features football powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay dominating the tournament.

Starting in 1916, this tournament is the oldest after the Olympics. However, at that time, it wasn’t known as the ‘Copa América’. Until 1975, it was called the ‘South American Football Championship’. From 1975 onwards, it began its journey under the name Copa América.

Since 1990, countries from other continents, particularly Asian nations, have also been invited to participate in the tournament. The first edition of the tournament had only four teams, but from the following editions, it expanded to ten teams.

Argentina

Argentina has the most Copa America titles to date. Surpassing Uruguay, they have won 16 titles so far. Under Lionel Messi, Argentina continues to achieve success. After their victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, they also won the latest Copa América in 2024, taking their tally to a record 16 titles, beating Uruguay. In the final held in the United States, Argentina triumphed over Uruguay in a penalty shootout.

Uruguay

Uruguay, with its rich history, has been one of the most successful teams in Copa América. In the first ten editions, they won the title six times. With a total of 15 titles, Uruguay is second in terms of Copa América victoories.

Brazil

While not as successful as Argentina or Uruguay, Brazil has claimed the third-highest number of titles in Copa América, winning 9 times.

Chile

Chile has won two Copa América titles in the last five editions, in 2015 and 2016. Both of these titles came after defeating Argentina in the finals. Despite finishing as runners-up four times, Chile has only won the tournament twice.

Peru and Paraguay

Peru won their first Copa América title in 1939 by defeating Uruguay in the final. The team had to wait 34 years for their second title, which came in 1975. Paraguay won their first title in 1953, defeating Brazil in the final. However, they also had to wait 22 years for their second title. Both countries have won two titles each so far.

Bolivia and Colombia

Bolivia won their first Copa América in 1963 by defeating Paraguay in the final, while Colombia claimed their first title in 2001 by beating Mexico. Both teams have won one title each in the tournament’s history.
