Nepal’s cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has been found guilty of raping an 18-year-old woman by a Kathmandu District Court, marking a bothering chapter in the career of the former national team captain.
The court ruling contradicted previous reports, determining the victim was not a minor at the time of the incident. Lamichhane, currently out on bail, faces the possibility of up to 10 years in jail, pending sentencing scheduled for January 10.
This verdict comes after a prolonged legal saga that saw Lamichhane’s suspension by the Cricket Association of Nepal following an arrest warrant in Kathmandu. The issue surfaced during his participation in the CPL 2022, whereupon Lamichhane left the tournament and was subsequently taken into custody upon his return to Kathmandu.
Despite fervently denying the allegations, Lamichhane faced public protests and repercussions from the cricketing fraternity. His return to the national side earlier this year was met with controversy, with opposition teams abstaining from handshakes during matches. His cricketing future now remains uncertain as he awaits the final sentencing and plans to appeal the verdict in a higher court.
