At the IPL 2024 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders created history by securing Mitchell Starc for a record-breaking INR 24.75 crores, marking the highest-ever signing in IPL history.
The left-arm Australian pacer’s acquisition surpassed Pat Cummins’ earlier record of INR 20.50 crores, establishing both as the first players to breach the INR 20 crore mark in the IPL auctions. Starc, having last played in the IPL eight years ago, returns with an impressive track record, claiming 34 wickets from 27 games with an economy rate of 7.17 across the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
The auction showcased a frenzy for overseas fast bowlers. Cummins, the Australian captain, was also in demand, ultimately landing with Sunrisers Hyderabad for a staggering INR 20.50 crores. Royal Challengers Bangalore actively pursued West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph, securing him for INR 11.50 crores, while Harshal Patel claimed the highest bid among Indian players, signing with Punjab Kings for INR 11.75 crores.
Among other significant signings, Mumbai Indians acquired Gerald Coetzee for INR 5 crores and Dilshan Madushanka for INR 4.6 crores. Notably, Chris Woakes fetched INR 4.2 crores from Punjab Kings, while Chennai Super Kings invested INR 4 crores on Shardul Thakur and INR 1.8 crores on Rachin Ravindra. Sunrisers Hyderabad secured Wanindu Hasaranga for INR 1.5 crores in a packed and high-stakes auction for top cricketing talent.
