In a rain-interrupted clash, New Zealand surged to victory, securing a 1-0 lead against Bangladesh in the first ODI in Dunedin.

A dominating partnership of 171 runs between Will Young and skipper Tom Latham set the stage for New Zealand’s triumph in a game shortened to 30 overs per side.

Opting to chase a revised target of 245, Bangladesh faced an uphill battle. Despite a brief hope at 80 for 2 in the 12th over, debutant Josh Clarkson’s impactful spell dismantled Bangladesh’s top order, removing key batsmen Anamul Haque and Litton Das in consecutive overs.

New Zealand’s innings faced early hiccups due to rain, but Young and Latham steadied the ship. However, interruptions persisted, altering the game’s duration to a 30-over contest. The duo accelerated brilliantly post the rain breaks, with Latham smashing milestones including his 4000 ODI runs and a swift half-century. The onslaught continued with Young joining the charge, achieving a blazing century off just 82 balls.

Bangladesh’s chase faltered despite efforts from Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. New Zealand’s bowlers, particularly Ish Sodhi and Clarkson, destabilized Bangladesh’s batting line-up. Despite brief resistance, Bangladesh couldn’t bridge the escalating run rate, ultimately falling short by 44 runs as New Zealand secured a commanding victory.

the second ODI between these two sites will be played on the 20th of December.
