In a second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Nelson, Soumya Sarkar’s exceptional 169 wasn’t enough to secure victory for Bangladesh.
Despite his heroic innings, New Zealand chased down Bangladesh’s challenging total of 291, clinching victory with seven wickets to spare and sealing the series 2-0.
Soumya Sarkar’s record-breaking knock, featuring an array of 22 boundaries and two maximums, marked the highest score by an Asian batter in ODIs played in New Zealand. His resilient partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim, adding 91 runs, aided Bangladesh after an uncertain start.
However, New Zealand’s top order, particularly Henry Nicholls (95) and Will Young (89), dominated the chase. Their robust partnership of 128 runs steered the hosts close to victory. Captain Tom Latham and Tom Blundell concluded the match, guiding New Zealand to the target with 22 balls to spare.
Despite Sarkar’s remarkable efforts, Bangladesh succumbed to New Zealand’s consistent performance, marking their 18th consecutive ODI defeat against the Kiwis on New Zealand soil. The series finale will take place in Napier, with Bangladesh aiming to salvage pride after a resilient but ultimately insufficient effort in Nelson.
