Uganda’s people either stayed up all night or woke up in the morning to watch their cricket team create history after beating Papua New Guinea by three wickets. This is the first victory for Uganda Cricket in the T20 World Cup, as the team qualified for the first time in an ICC event.

Uganda Captain Brain Masaba said it was a massive night for Uganda Cricket as the team secured their first victory in the T20 World Cup. “There is no other way to say it. It’s massive for Ugandan cricket. To be at a World Cup is one thing, but to pick up a World Cup win, that’s something different. And it hasn’t sunk in yet.” Masaba said.

Masaba is happy to give the fans a remarkable win as the fans stayed up all night to watch the match. “It was very special for us as a group to give them a win, these guys back home that have stayed up at night – it’s 5.30 in the morning in Uganda right now. so, these guys have stayed up to watch this and I hope they feel as elated as we do. So yeah, a very, very special feeling.” Masaba said.

Uganda’s win did not come easily unless their most experienced Fran Nsubuga showed a magical spell with the ball. The 43-year-old leg-spinner bowled a stirring spell which included two wicket-maidens and gave away just four runs in the other two at a just 1 economy rate.

Masaba doesn’t forget to give credit to Nsubuga’s magical spell which influenced the team’s victory. “It’s incredible. So, for him to come out, I’m not surprised that he did what he did, but doing it at this stage, that’s very, very special. And, I’m very, very happy for him,”

“I watched Frank play growing up, so to see him do what he does on the biggest stage makes me very emotional. To be there to witness it, I don’t quite have the words. I mean, he deserves it. We know how good he is, how good he’s been over the years and the amount of work he has taken to stay that consistent.”

Uganda will face hosts West Indies on June 8, at Guyana.
