Bangladesh and New Zealand’s second Test match in Dhaka witnessed an unprecedented moment when Mushfiqur Rahim, a stalwart of the Bangladeshi cricket team, became the first player from his country to face an unusual dismissal – obstructing the field – in Test cricket.
This unique incident occurred during the post-lunch session’s 41st over, marking a historical first for Bangladeshi cricket.
Rahim, batting at a confident 35 runs, faced a delivery from New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson. As the ball veered away from the stumps, Rahim made an unconventional move by using his right hand to swat the ball, despite its trajectory not heading towards the wickets. This action, deemed against cricket rules as ‘obstructing the field’, led to his dismissal. Initially classified as ‘handling the ball’, this dismissal was later included under the ‘obstructing the field’ rule by the MCC in 2017.
Interestingly, this wasn’t Rahim’s only attempt at such an action during the match. In an earlier instance against Tim Southee, he made a similar move without making contact between his hands and the ball.
Rahim’s exit concluded a significant partnership of 56 runs between him and Shahadat Hossain Dipu and marked the fifth wicket loss for Bangladesh in the innings. This unprecedented incident added an unusual chapter to Rahim’s cricketing journey, highlighting the unexpected turns the sport can take.
