This is not just a fantasy—such scenarios could have been a reality in the world’s most popular franchise league, the IPL. The geopolitical and psychological rivalry between India and Pakistan has been evident since British rule. This rivalry has influenced various sectors, including politics and the economy. However, cricket was a rare exception where the two nations often put aside their differences. As a result, in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, 11 Pakistani cricketers, including Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Asif, and Mohammad Hafeez, were allowed to participate.

However, on November 26, 2008, relations between the two cricketing nations took a drastic turn. On this day, Mumbai—one of India’s major cities—was attacked at multiple key locations, including the iconic Taj Hotel. The attack was orchestrated by terror organizations based in Pakistan, including Lashkar-e-Taiba, resulting in the deaths of over 180 Indian civilians.

Following this catastrophic event, tensions between India and Pakistan escalated across all sectors, including cricket. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reflected this national sentiment and, noting Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism and then banned Pakistani players from participating in the IPL from the 2009 season onward. Since then, Pakistani cricketers have stayed absent from the IPL.

Many Pakistani cricketers openly express their disappointment at being unable to play in the IPL. In an interview with Pakistan’s Samaa TV, fast bowler Hasan Ali once admitted, “Every player dreams of playing in the IPL. It is undoubtedly the most popular franchise league in the world. If I ever get the opportunity in the future, I would love to play there.”

The 11 Pakistani Cricketers Who Played in IPL 2008

Despite the ongoing ban, a total of 11 Pakistani cricketers featured in the IPL’s debut season in 2008 :

Sohail Tanvir (Rajasthan Royals)

The left-arm pacer was one of the stars of the inaugural IPL season. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he became the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets in 11 matches, playing a crucial role in Rajasthan’s first title victory.

Shoaib Akhtar (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Shoaib Akhter is known as the Rawalpindi Express, he played for Kolkata Knight Riders, forming a pace duo with fellow Pakistani bowler Umar Gul. He played 3 matches, taking 5 wickets at an economy rate of 7.71.

Umar Gul (Kolkata Knight Riders)

A lethal bowler in T20s, Umar Gul shined for KKR, especially in a match against Kings XI Punjab, where he took 4 wickets and contributed 24 runs with the bat. He ended the season with 12 wickets in 6 matches.

Shoaib Malik (Delhi Daredevils)

The then-captain of the Pakistan national team, Shoaib Malik, played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). However, with foreign stars like AB de Villiers, Glenn McGrath, Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Daniel Vettori in the squad, he found limited opportunities, playing 7 matches and scoring just 52 runs at an average of 13.

Salman Butt (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Salman Butt struggled to break into KKR’s playing XI initially, as the squad already had overseas stars like Ricky Ponting, Chris Gayle, and Brendon McCullum. However, he got his opportunity when they left for national duties. Opening with Sourav Ganguly, But scored 193 runs in 7 matches**.
