The Zimbabwe Cricket board has suspended allrounders Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta for allegedly violating anti-doping regulations.

The players tested positive for a banned recreational drug during an in-house doping test, leading to their immediate suspension from all cricket activities pending a disciplinary hearing.

The duo, part of Zimbabwe’s recent series against Ireland, face charges under the ZC Code of Conduct and await a hearing that will determine the duration of their suspension. Mavuta joined the team for the third T20I and subsequent ODIs, while Madhevere played all three T20Is against Ireland.

Despite Madhevere’s participation in Zimbabwe’s ongoing Logan Cup, where he represented Mashonaland Eagles, both players’ suspensions cast a shadow following the team’s failure to secure a spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The announcement comes on the heels of coach Dave Houghton’s resignation due to Zimbabwe’s recent setbacks, including their World Cup qualification miss and an unsuccessful series against Ireland, signaling a challenging phase for the national team.
